The automotive industry took a while to get going as people simply preferred to keep their horse and carriage. It got them where they needed to go and many people did not want to hassle with a machine driving them around. Until people realized the huge benefit of having a car, there were only a few cars on the roads.
Now, you have to remember that this number of cars is enormous for a plant that was manufacturing cars by hand. They did not have the heavy machinery we have these days. All of the cars that Ford released were put together by factory workers, now you can imagine what that factory looked like.
There were probably a huge number of people working in making cars in those days. Each person had a different job responsibility and you would be in charge of certain parts of the car and equipment to put them together safely.
Since then the car went from strength to strength and there are more than a million cars in the world today and Ford is still going strong. The time when the first car came out was still the time of the horse and the cart, and because money was not flowing like water (like it is now) many people stuck with their horse and cart, and that is what got them from A to B, and worked perfectly well.
